Research began by identifying associations and organizations in Ireland, particularly in Dublin, that support the Deaf community. This led to CHIME, an organization providing services to over 32,500 Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families. Contact was made, and an interview was arranged with prepared questions to better understand the daily challenges faced by Deaf individuals and explore solutions to promote inclusivity. After speaking with Brendan, one of CHIME’s founders, the initial idea of creating a card game was refined based on valuable insights. This conversation deepened the understanding of common struggles and increased motivation to develop something impactful. A visit to the Deaf Village in Cabra and the Irish Deaf Society followed, where a prototype was presented. Feedback was extremely positive, especially as efforts are being made to integrate Irish Sign Language (ISL) into the educational system. Let’s Sign!
‘Let’s Sign’: an immersive card game redefining Irish sign language learning with vibrant visuals and inclusive design. Our game offers an engaging taster approach to mastering the alphabet, appealing to children and families of all backgrounds. Beyond the game, we propose a concerted effort to integrate sign language into mainstream education. By advocating for its inclusion in curricula, we empower individuals with essential communication skills and foster a culture of inclusivity.
We aim to break down barriers and promote linguistic diversity starting in the Irish educational system. Join us in championing this initiative, as we work towards a world where sign language is not just taught, but embraced as a vital aspect of communication.
This project was Highly Commended in the Creative Conscience Awards 2024.
